Get a Hybrid or Not？

  I got a question asking about whether or not she should take advantage of the new hybrid clubs. She had thought about trying them and caught some grief from her regular foursome. Apparently, her golfing partners were purists and thought she should keep hitting those 3 and 4 irons. So golfers what are your thoughts? Well, first I’ll give you mine.

  I don’t know about the rest of you golf nuts, but no matter how well I’ve been hitting the golf ball, I’ve never had much consistent luck with the long irons. I can manage the 5 ok at times, but for the most part the 2, 3, 4, and 5 irons are a gamble every time I pull them out.

  So a little while back I tried a TaylorMade Rescue 11 instead of hitting my 3 iron. And I loved the way that club felt and I REALLY loved the way I hit the ball with it! I then tried one instead of my 4 iron. Before you know it I didn’t have anything higher than a 6 iron in my bag. And I was hitting the ball better than ever.
  And you can use these clubs to get out of trouble in fairway traps and tall rough. The bottom line is that these clubs are just much easier to hit than the long irons. If you are anything but a low handicapper, you are probably giving up between 6 and 14 strokes a round by not hitting these hybrids!
  I am a high handicapper who cannot hit fairway woods. Last year I bought two hybrids, 22-degrees and 19-degrees . The 22-degree TaylorMade Rescue 11 has become my favorite club in the bag. The 19-degree replaces my 3-wood. It doesn’t give me quite the distance of a well-struck 3-wood, but well-struck 3-woods were few and far between for me.

  I have always had trouble hitting my long irons and frankly my fairway woods are not consistent at all. I recently added a TaylorMade Rescue 11 to my bag. Instead of reaching for my 6 iron, my club of choice is my hybrid hands down. I get distance from the fairway that just wasn’t there with an iron for me. Similar to its predecessor, the R11, the new R11S features a contrasting black face which golfers claim improves their alignment and accuracy off the tee and confidence at address - the clubhead appearing large compared to the ball. It's triangular shape also helps provide a higher launch, more forgiving trajectory.
ASP technology - a raised five-point plate which can be rotated and secured - allows the golfer to adjust face angle independent of loft setting which means the face angle can be adjusted independently to the loft and vice versa - neutral, slightly open, open, slightly closed and closed.
In addition the combination of Flight Control Technology and moveable weights enables the golfer to adjust the loft and face angles for up to approximately 60 yards side-to-side trajectory as well as the swing weight.
There are also two weight ports in the R11S—one in the heel and one in the toe—which can hold the one- and the 10-gram weights that come with the driver. Positioning the 10-gram weight in the heel encourages a draw while screwing it into the toe should help you hit a fade.

R11S is about Tuning and Speed

  TaylorMade believes it has taken adjustable technology to the next level with the introduction in February of the all-white driver, a Tour Preferred (TP) version of which is currently in the hands of its staff players including Sergio Garcia.

  Last season's R11 featured a 440-cc head, but the R11S hits the USGA's maximum legal size, 460cc. TaylorMade says the bigger head combined with better aerodynamics make the Taylormade R11S Driver a little longer than the R11, and it has a slightly-larger sweet spot. The club should also do a better job of helping golfers maintain ball speed on mishits.

  While last season's R11 had a red adjustable plate on the sole that allowed golfers to choose from three face angles, the Taylormade R11S Driver has five settings: Neutral, Open, Closed, Slightly Open (Open+), and Slightly (Closed+).

  The adjustable sleeve that connects the shaft to the head can be set in a Neutral, Higher or Lower setting. The Higher setting adds 1.5° of loft (transforming a 9° driver into a 10.5° driver) while the Lower setting decreases loft by 1.5°.

  "In many cases a golfer may not be able to see that much of a difference with the smaller sleeve [used on the R11], but the larger sleeve is going to give them the ability to dial in that launch condition to be exact without changing the spin rate," says Tom Olsavsky, TaylorMade's senior director of product creation.
I was very impressed with the Taylormade R11S Driver and hit it well.  What's great was that I was able to take the shaft in my current R11 (Graphite Design ADI 6) and put it into the Taylormade R11S Driver when I played yesterday.  I was really able to compare both heads, using the shaft I've been fitted for.

  What's also cool is that two completely opposite golfers can play the same head.   Let's say a 9*, my specs might be 9* at 3* open and another golfer could tune the driver to be12* at 3* closed, same club head!

Forgiving irons always have big size, but TaylorMade R11 Irons are of an exception. They are forgiving, but they are smaller than the 2011 CB irons. TaylorMade R11 Irons are a cross between the 2011 CB’s and Burner 2.0s. Inconsistent weight variation and "hot spots" often occur in clubhead design, but TaylorMade has gotten around that with their "Precision Weight Port" system. This is a plug that is mounted in the back of the clubhead and allows them to dial in a precise weight for each club. This bright red plug is made of either aluminum, steel, or tungsten with weight variations of 2.5 to as much as 17 grams, and are not adjustable by consumers. TaylorMade R11 Irons use the Inverted Cone Technology to deliver more consistent ball speeds and forgiveness on mis-hits. This technology works by employing a thinner face at the center of the clubhead and thicker as it radiates out toward the edges. This allows for little loss of distance on slight mis-hits and directional deviations of only a few yards. At impact, the TaylorMade R11 Irons feel and sound quieter ("muted" is a good word) than the rather loud Burner 2.0 because the R11's clubface is slightly thicker in the impact zone as well as where it connects to the sole.

TaylorMade R11 Irons have been further improved on other aspects. The short-irons have a shallow undercut channel between the face and rear to control both feel and CG (Center of Gravity) location while the mid-irons have a moderate undercut, and the long irons have a larger undercut that puts weight farther back from the club face for increased forgiveness. This is a large progress, and two other progressions are the top line thickness and sole width. You'll see the widest top-line in the R11 long irons (for confidence as you address the ball) and getting progressively thinner as the irons shorten and your natural confidence increases. The sole width of TaylorMade R11 Irons allows a bit more weight to be added lower in the clubhead on the longer irons to help get the ball airborne and progresses to a slightly narrower sole in the short irons.
